How I Extend Reading and Literacy Skills

You’ll be continuing to read to your child – at bedtime or at any other time you can. I find that reading after a meal is a good opportunity, before you go on to whatever you’re doing next.

From some time in the Reception Year or when the child can read simple three letter words, I make small key word cards and start to make sentences with them. Use the simple three letter words in addition to common words which we learn to recognise.

We use ‘sounding out’ and the skill of recognition. Now will be the time to learn to read, if not a little earlier, these words – I, it, is, the, It, is, look, see, love, go, to, me, my, zoo, zoom, good.

These are some of the sentences we make:

I am ….. (child’s name). I love mum / dad, sister’s/brother’s name, yes I love …. . I can run. (make some full stops now). I go to mum. I see Dad. Look at … . The man is good, It/it is good/hot. The cat is in the pan! Look at me!
