What Will Be Happening at Nursery Provision at This Time?

They will be learning to interact with other children, engaging in imaginative play inside and outdoors, art and model-making craft, listening to stories and books and expressing themselves through language.

At some point during the year, they may learn to break up words into small, single sounds.

These are spoken exercises.

  • ‘Blending’
B-a-g what word do you think I am saying? b-a-g, b-a-g, yes bag! It could be a more complex word t-r-ai-n, ch – air, l-a-p-t-o-p, p-i-c-ture, p-a-ve-m-e-n-t. Here they are learning that each word is divided into individual sounds, sounds, not letters. Sometimes a funny robot voice is used.
  • ‘Segmenting’
The adult says a word and the child must sound it out. Let’s say a name – or moon (m oo n), desk (d e s k), jumper (j u m p er). This is a more difficult skill than the first one.
  • The skill of hearing and creating rhyming words will also be visited.

The child will learn to recognise his or her name and then how to write it. Likewise, they will learn to count and recognise early numbers. It may be that some will also begin to learn some sounds in a gentle fun way.
